With over 24 million unique visits per month, the Dubai-based e-commerce platform Souq.com is now the largest of its kind in the Arab world. Founded in 2005 by Ronaldo Mouchawar, Souq.com started as an auction site linked to internet portal Maktoob in 2005. Six years later, it changed its model to an online shopping site with a marketplace and retail items for sale on its platform.
The site attracts around 45 million visits per month, drawn to its more than 30 product categories, including consumer electronics, fashion, health and beauty, household goods and baby items.
Acquired by Amazon in 2017, the company is expected to expand beyond the Arabian Gulf and North Africa while gaining efficiency across its global supply chain, technology use and delivery times. Souq. com’s international acquisition signifies that having made its mark in this region, the brand is set to cement its place on the global stage.
