Known for its fertile agricultural land and high-quality marble, Masfout is located in the south of the UAE, near Hatta, a 90-minute drive from Ajman city. The site’s elevated altitude comes with cooler temperatures, while its rugged backdrop attracts outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Hosting resilient flora and fauna, Masfout was once home to leopards, gazelles and foxes.
One of the location’s key attractions is Masfout Castle. Perched on a mountaintop, the 19th-century building was once the first line of defence against bandits heading to neighbouring Oman. Built with stones, mud and local timber, the tower-shaped structure consists of two rooms and a gate. There’s evidence of human activity in the area dating back some 5,000 years thanks to archaeological finds such as an ancient rock carving, a depiction of which can be found at the Ajman Museum.
Today, the stretch of road running past the outskirts of Masfout is lined with roadside pottery vendors, which is another key stop for visitors. The rocky countryside surrounding the town is also ideal for walking, mountain biking, picnics and wadi exploration.
Masfout’s rich history, ample leisure activities and spectacular scenery make it worth discovering. Upcoming hotel and park developments, not to mention the launch of Ajman’s international airport, will make Masfout a global tourist attraction.
